Math Colloquium Course Requirements

Below are the course requirements for students who are taking the Colloquium (Math 175 or 375) for credit. Due dates and deadlines are on the course Canvas page

MATH 175 - Mathematics Colloquium

A student taking this course will be required to attend all presentations in the M*A*T*H Colloquium series during the semester and, in addition, keep a journal.

Typically Offered Fall & Spring May Be Repeated May be taken three times for credit.
Grading: CNC

Course Requirements

  • Grading policy: CR/NC only.
  • Attend all colloquium lectures.
  • Prepare a reaction paper (typed only) on each lecture. Your paper should not be lecture notes. It should include:
  • Two to three pages would be a respectable length (two-page minimum).
    • a coherent summary of what the speaker said (this may require some additional reading),
    • what meaning it had for you, and any reaction or comment you have on the topic.
  • Each reaction paper should be turned in via the course Canvas site within one week of the lecture.
  • If you must miss a lecture, you may view a video of it by going to the Mathematics and Statistics Department’s website. If you have technical difficulties, please consult the Department staff. The quality of the videos may occasionally make it difficult to read the slides; in this case, you are responsible for getting notes from a colleague.
  • It is our custom to invite our off-campus speakers to be our guest for dinner at a local restaurant. You are welcome to join us. If funds permit, we may even buy your dinner! Occasionally we have pizza in Darwin 108 instead.

MATH 375 - M*A*T*H Colloquium

Students will be required to attend presentations, keep a journal, and write a significant paper on one of the presentations. No more than 3 units may be applied to the upper-division major or minor requirements. May not be taken concurrently with MATH 175.

Prerequisite(s): Class open to Juniors and Seniors only

Course Requirements

  • Grading policy: Student option. Students using units from Math 375 towards their major must choose the "A-F" option.
  • Attend all colloquium lectures.
  • Prepare a reaction paper (typed only) on each lecture. Your paper should not be lecture notes. It should include:
    • a coherent summary of what the speaker said (this may require some additional reading),
    • what meaning it had for you, and
    • any reaction or comment you have on the topic.
    • Two to three pages would be a respectable length (two-page minimum).
    • Each reaction paper should be turned in via the course Canvas site within one week of the lecture.
    • If you must miss a lecture, you may view a video of it by going to the Mathematics Department’s web-site. If you have technical difficulties, please consult the Department staff. The quality of the videos may occasionally make it difficult to read the slides.
  • Write a research paper on one of the lectures. Discuss your choice of topic with the instructor before beginning your writing. Do additional research on the mathematics of the talk. In the paper, elaborate on the mathematics content of the lecture and include information you obtain from outside reading. The paper must be typed, double-spaced, and include a short list of references. It should be 5-10 pages in length. It is due via the Canvas site during finals week.
