Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day

Dark blue background with wavy lines. Yellow text reads "February 21, 2026, Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day"

Sonoma State University Campus
Sat, Feb 21, 9:00 am – 2:30 pm

Join us for a day of exploration, networking, and fun!  You are invited to the SSU campus to honor the life of Sonia Kovalevsky, the first woman to receive her PhD in Mathematics, and to celebrate the participation of all women in mathematics, statistics, and data science.  The event will include hands-on workshops, a problem "palooza" and gallery walk, a career panel, special workshops for parents and teachers, and many opportunities to network with local students and professionals in a dynamic format.

Event Workshops Include:

  • Flight Path: Discover the Math Behind Drones and Rescue Missions
Get ready to explore how drones can help save lives and find lost dogs! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to fly drones safely, plan missions, and collect thermal images from the air. You’ll discover how to read heat maps, tell the difference between people or animals and background heat, and use real data to guide a rescue team to the right spot. It’s a mix of math, science, and adventure, all powered by drones!

  • Magic, Luck, or Love: What Does it Take to Be a Great Math Teacher?
We've all experienced math classrooms as students, and if we're lucky, some of these experiences have been great. But what makes a mathematics class "great"? In this session, we'll consider some of our favorite classes and what happened in them to make us feel capable, challenged, or just want to keep coming back. We'll connect these experiences to what we know about what the best teachers and mathematics teachers do, and consider what it takes for a teacher to be "great." The big question is: is great teaching more about magic, luck, love... or something else?

  • Math at Burning Man: Geometry on the Playa
Have you ever wondered how simple shapes can be brought together to create
something strong and beautiful? Join us for an exploration of angles, planes, fusion, base, and dimension, and then get ready to build a structure that would be worthy of Burning Man.

  • Math in Motion: Discover How Math Brings Movement to Life
Join us for a hands-on workshop where you’ll experiment with Hot Wheels cars,
bungee jumping Labubus, and other real world systems to explore the math behind motion. Make predictions, test your ideas, and see how math can describe the way things move. Perfect for curious students who love to explore, experiment, and think like scientists!

  • Math Saves Lives: Crucial Calculations in Critical Situations
Imagine being a healthcare professional called to respond to a natural disaster. All power is knocked out so you will need to calculate IV fluid rates, vital signs and resuscitation medication doses by hand. In this disaster simulation, you'll be taking vitals, using mathematics to interpret results and providing treatment to patients in an emergency situation. You'll get to work with issues involving the heart, the lungs, and IV hydration to save lives in a setting with limited resources.

There is no registration fee and lunch will be provided.

Registration opens January 5, 2026.
